Bitter for Sweet, and Sweet for Bitter

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”  Hebrews 4:12

The purpose of our Women’s Bible Study is to teach the Word of God, thereby equipping women to apply the Word to their lives.

Last Thursday, our study was looking at Jezebel as part of our Women In His Image series.  One of the clear messages we get from the life of this wicked woman is that she was created in the image of God, and then raised in a home and culture where all manner of evil was commonplace, and where idol worship was the norm.

In looking at the subject of discerning truth from evil, I talked about a very popular movie series and how subjects that once struck fear in our hearts have been made to look innocent and beautiful.  I shared Isaiah 5:20: “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!”

After the teaching concluded, I was approached by a young woman who I know wants to live a godly life.   She said the Holy Spirit brought conviction as she listened to the teaching, and that she could now see the evil side of a story that just that morning had seemed so beautiful to her.

The next day, I received an email from her.  I’m including parts of her email here:  “I have a confession.  At Bible Study I felt so strongly about the [message]… but then as I got home and thought more and more about it my “mind” started to change like…it’s not sooooo bad, and so I prayed about it…. reluctantly because it was such a “fun light-hearted movie”… I decided to Google to see what does the Bible say [regarding such movies] , and the more I read the more the Lord confirmed that not only was it not good but that it was everything evil and not of the Lord and the verse Isaiah 5:20.. the one about don’t let good be evil and vice versa. And not only did He let me see the TRUTH and instead of pulling any wool off my eyes He BLEW off the wool! And the movies yesterday morning that I really enjoyed now suddenly CREEPED me out and I had no emotional bond to them at all.”

What a joy it is to share the word of God, trusting that His Holy Spirit will confirm His truth!  It is so exciting to watch women not only grow in knowledge of scripture, but also in their desire to obey and honor their loving Father!

  1. What an awesome testimony! God is blowing my mind each week as we study and dig deeper into the women He has given us as examples to live by (and sometimes not live by) in His word. Ladies, if you haven’t joined us for this study of “Women in His Image”, it’s not too late to join us! Please come, and allow the Holy Spirit to radically impact your life!
